Case Study - Art Basel Qatar
Selling the first Art Basel in the Middle East
Client: Art Basel Qatar
Sector: Art & Culture · Major Events · Luxury
Market: Qatar · GCC · MENASA · Global
Role: Sales & Partnership Manager Fair: 3 to 7 February 2026 · M7, Doha
120% of sales target 17,000+ visitors in five days 10 partners closed 141 days from onboarding to opening night 5th city in Art Basel history. First in the Middle East.
The Challenge
Art Basel sells on fifty six years of proof. Basel. Miami Beach. Hong Kong. Paris. Doha had none of it. No previous edition. No attendance figure. No case study. No proof the region would buy a global art platform at global rates.
I joined the founding commercial team on 15 September 2025. The fair opened 141 days later. In that window the entire regional partnership portfolio had to be built from zero and closed against a target set on ambition rather than history.
The Insight
You cannot sell reach that does not exist yet. But scarcity exists on day one. There is only ever one first edition, and founding partner status is the single asset in a launch year that cannot be bought back later at any price. So the pitch stopped being a media conversation and became a legacy one. Not what you reach in February. What you own for every edition after it.
The Strategy
Sell position, not inventory. Category ownership and founding status, priced on permanence.
Enter through the real decision chain. Gulf partnership decisions do not move through procurement. They move through EXCO, boards and sovereign stakeholders. The programme was built on senior access, not on a rate card.
Protect the global framework. Flex the delivery. Art Basel brand governance held on every agreement. Activation formats, approval chains and cultural protocol adapted to Doha.
One owner, full lifecycle. Prospect to post fair report, single point of accountability. On a 141 day runway, handoffs are where deals die.
The Partnership/Sponsorship Porfolio secured for the first edition
Eight categories. No gaps.
Aviation Qatar Airways Destination Visit Qatar Finance UBS Automotive BMW Luxury Fashion Zegna Hospitality Rosewood Doha Private Client Quintessentially Real Estate Msheireb Properties Media Media City Qatar Logistics Gulf Warehouse Company
Delivered alongside stakeholder coordination across Qatar Sports Investments and QC+, and integration of Art Basel's global partners into the regional edition.
The Result
120% of target. Closed above a number nobody had a benchmark for. 17,000+ visitors across five days. Global and MENASA represented in the same tier structure, at the same standard.
The portfolio is now the benchmark every future Doha edition sells against. And it answered a question the Gulf has been arguing for a decade: global cultural IP will commercialise in this market at international rates, provided the person selling it understands both the global standard and the local room.
